Books for Sale

The Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society was founded in 1985 as a non-profit organization and is an affiliate of the Blount County Public Library.  All proceeds are used to benefit the Library.

Objectives

 The purpose of the Society shall be:

1.  To bring together persons interested in genealogical studies and in the collection and preservation of genealogical and historical materials pertaining to Blount County.

2.  To collect and preserve historical documents, traditions, oral history and items of historic value.

3.  To assist the Blount County Public Library in enlarging its collection of genealogical and local history reference materials.

4.  To strive to increase the awareness of the pleasures and values to be gained from the study of family history and the preservation of historic interest.

5.  To sponsor classes, seminars, tours and other events for the educational benefit of members and the public.

6.  To publish The Blount Journal, a periodical providing a medium for exchange of genealogical and historical information.

Meetings

Quarterly meetings are held in March, May/June, September and November/December.  The May/June meeting is a picnic, and the location is announced at the March meeting and posted on this website.  All other meetings are held at the Blount County Public Library at 504 N. Cusick Street, Maryville,TN.

2009 Meetings

March 17, 2009 at 7:00 PM   Allen R. Coggins, author of "Place Names of the Smokies"

May 30, 2009 from  11:00 AM  to 2:00 PM
Pot luck lunch at 11:30 AM (bring food & drinks; the Society provides ice, cups, plates & tableware) followed by a walking tour of Maryville College Cemetery, led by Sally McNiell.  Time permitting, Mark Bennett will also lead a tour of New Providence Presbyterian Cemetery, located on W. Broadway in Maryville.

Sept 15, 2009 at 7:00 PM 
Dr. Gail Palmer will present a program entitled, "People of the Smokies, Gone but Not Forgotten" and will also have available for purchase an historical DVD which she wrote and produced, entitled, "Sacred Places of the Smokies".  Everyone is invited to attend.

Of Special Interest

Oct 13, 2009 at 7:00 PM                                                                                    The Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society, in conjunction with Sam Houston Historic Schoolhouse Association, presents Billy Kennedy, widely recognized journalist in Northern Ireland for over thirty years.  Mr. Kennedy has an abiding interest in the Scots-Irish settlement on the American frontier and has authored a series of eight books which make up the "Scots-Irish Chronicles."  His ninth book, completed in 2007, is entitled "Our Most Priceless Heritage:  The Lasting Legacy of the Scots-Irish." 

The public is invited to his lecture which will begin at 7:00 PM in the Sharon Lawson Room of the Blount County Public Library.  His books will be available for purchase.
